In Book II of Boethius's Consolation, Fortuna personifies worldly instability and reversals of prosperity and adversity; she is not identical with the technical account of chance (casus) in V.1. Her wheel represents the rise and fall of external conditions, and riches, honours, and power are revocable loans rather than secure possessions. Philosophy argues that mutable externals cannot constitute beatitudo, while III.10 identifies perfect happiness and the highest Good with God.
