In De fato VIII (Bruns 172.17–174.28), Alexander describes luck and the fortuitous as unexpected outcomes that supervene on actions directed toward other ends. Digging may accidentally result in finding treasure, and going to the marketplace for another purpose may result in collecting a debt. The prior action is a clear causal condition of the result but not its proper or primary cause; Alexander therefore contrasts per se and per accidens causation rather than making chance wholly uncaused. Such outcomes occur rarely relative to the regular results of prior activities, in an account indebted to Aristotle, Physics II.4–6.
