EleutherIA — Defined term

Apocatastasis (Restoration)

ἀποκατάστασις

Hellenistic to Patristic

Apokatastasis is a general Greek word for restoration or re-establishment, whose meaning depends on context. Stoic conflagration, cosmic reconstitution, and recurrence must be distinguished and supported by their individual witnesses; Diogenes Laertius VII.134 does not by itself attest identical recurrence. “Origenist apokatastasis” is a later doctrinal label for disputed readings of eschatological passages in On First Principles. Origen's account of divine pedagogy and rational agency should not be reduced either to automatic predestination or to a simple denial of universal restoration.
